cookie has been with the family for 11 years (i think. i don't feel like calculating her age.). when i first got her as a puppy i wasn't very attached. she was just the family dog. i think it mainly had to do with the fact that i got her when i was in college. when i moved back home, i spent more time with her, trained her and became more and more attached to her. she became "my" dog. i trained her later in her life which has proven to be more difficult as she was set in her ways. you can teach a dog new tricks, but it's no easy task. since we never really "bonded" she wasn't very friendly and she didn't know how to take food from a person. she would snap and become protective over her food. she attempted to bite me a few times, but was never successful in hurting me. she got a bit of "hard love" and it seemed to be controlled for a while until yesterday. she always assumed me as the "alpha" and her next in the heirarchy. everyone else fell underneath her, including lil' TIT. when i got married and moved out, i left her with my mom and Candice. i felt she would protect them well. turns out that they were the ones in need of protection from her.
these days she's aging and not in the best of health. in actuality the reason why we got another dog was to keep her company. we felt she didn't have much longer to live. hands down, she WAS the favorite of the 2.
well, last night my mom gave her a bone and lil' TIT was trying to take it away from her. i assume cookie gave her fair warning that she wasn't giving it up, but lil' TIT didn't think she was much different than the other times we gave her a bone. cookie apparently lunged and bit her.... and wouldn't let go. she punctured my sister's middle finger in a few places and blood was (in her words) squirting everywhere.
in the meanwhile, hubby and i was enjoying a friday evening with a martini and a glass of wine. then i got a call and it was my mom telling me i had to come quick. so we dumped our drinks down the rain and rushed over. my sister (not jokingly) kept asking me if she was going to die. there was quite a bit of blood, but she wasn't going to die. the only concern at this point was, if she need stitches and if she needed a tetanus shot because she got bit by an animal. we called a very close doctor of our's and asked what we should do. he said if the bleeding stopped that it would be okay and to get a tetanus shot early the next morning. he advised if we went to the ER that it would probably be 3 in them morning before she got a shot. we decided to be safe and decided we had nothing to lose if we went. if we got lucky she would get a shot early. if it took too long then we can just go home and do what he advised. so off we went to queen of the valley ER. i knew this wasn't going to be pleasant. i work right next to the this hospital and i know what type of crowd this hospital generates. when we arrived, we saw people with a bad laceration to their arm that was bleeding through a bandage, people with no arms, babies (that appeared to have a cold or something because their ailments weren't physically visible) with parents that were no older than lil' TIT... the list went on and on. we were greeted with what was expected, attitude. this all made lil' TIT feel better. the grass was greener on her side.
now she talked about how she wished cookie would die. i can't blame her. we finally got called about 30 minutes later. this didn't mean we were going to be taken care of. this meant they were going to take down her information and determine that her injury wasn't life threatening and tell her to wait a few hours before they can give her a shot. we basically asked if she could get a shot and if she needed stitches, per a doctor's advice (that the volunteer happened to know, too. it helped). she said she couldn't do that but it would be okay if took the doctor's advice. so they re-bandaged her wound and off we went home.
the next day she went to a local doctor, got a shot, and did some bloodwork. cookie acted as if nothing happened and lil' TIT went back to SD. it's sad that now all the good memories of cookie will be overshadowed by this incident. i just hope this was an "accident" and won't happen again. i fear for my mom a bit since cookie looks at her like she looked at my sister.
